Criticism of how black influence was being kicked out. Instruments are communally owned; owned by ppl who are sponsoring the group: revivalism: spiritual practice w/ overlay of christian holy spirit. Secretive: kumina: linear aspect of music is secondary, more towards rhythm. Maracas, percussion, dancing: pocomania: spirit possession, trance-like, more melodic music but rhythm is still a strong part, all include music. Mento band: banjo, hand drums, guitar, marimbula (mbira); considered a sacred instrument in zimbabwe to connect to spirits of instrument, a homophonic instrument. Rural folk music, counterbalance to church music. By 50"s rnb and bee-bop replacing big band. Result of recording industry in jamaica, dj sound system. Jazz influence went to ska but jazz musician weren"t influenced by ska. Ska had 3 phases: 1960"s - uk-jamaican popularity, ska, 1970"s - 2 toned movement: became popular in uk. Both dealing w/ unrest of social situation: 1990"s - infusion of 2 styles. The mighty mighty bosstones by the rascal king.
