Paganini etudes: etudes: used to develop your piano technique. Years of pilgrimage: a set of books that relate to the countries, regions that he was going to like a piano diary. Tone (symphonic) poem programmaic wriing/lots of imagery, his creaion single movement free in form/structure. Wrote hungarian dances: naionalism he was hungarian. A lot of his music is mono-themaic so there"s one predominant theme throughout. Hamlet tone poem: a form of expressionism, starts with french horns very somber, a dark place, disjointed, turbulence happening within hamlets mind. Expressionism whats going on in the mind of a character: lots of leaps and jumps = emoion, focuses on the lower notes of the orchestra, very intense piece. Les jeux d"eau a la villa d"este : piano, programmaic, precursor to impressionism. Transcendental etude # 10: very technically demanding. Folk music: taking any of the idioms and puing it into music.
