Determination of the surface tension for various solutions using a tensiometer. The surface tension of a solution can be described as the work that is required to resist attractive forces that are between liquid molecules in order to increase the surface area of a liquid. It is the force exerted upon the surface molecules of a liquid by the molecules that are beneath to draw the surface molecules which allow the liquid to take the shape of having the least surface area [2]. Through the lab conducted the surface tension of various solutions was measured using a teniometer, where the surface tension was measured in dyne/cm or n/m2. In order to measure the free energy of a system the following equation can be used [1], Where g is the total free energy of the system, g is the free energy of the bulk liquid, a is the o, + a surface area and is the surface tension [1].
