Week 1 the strategic role of human resources management. Human capital the knowledge, edu(cid:272)ation, training, skills, and e(cid:454)pertise of an organization"s workforce. Individual managers (marketing, accounting) make their own decisions for their departments whether to hire or fire someone, so every manager needs to have hr knowledge, Line authority give direction, hire and fire. Staff authority give advice, develop policies and practices that line managers follow. An hr manager has line authority over his or her hr employees and staff authority over other line managers i. e. sales manager, marketing manager, accounting manager. In small organizations, no staff managers might be available to assist. Credible activist: both credible (respected, listened to, trusted) and active (takes a position, challenges assumptions).
