Document Summary

Knowledge management (km) involves capturing, classifying, evaluating, retrieving and sharing information assets in a way that provides context for effective decisions and actions. Knowledge management system (kms) supports capturing, organizing, and disseminating knowledge throughout an organization. Intellectual and knowledge based assets fall into one of the two categories: explicit, tacit. Explicit knowledge: consists of anything that can be documented, archived, and codified, often with the help of information systems. Examples of explicit knowledge are trademarks, business plans and customer lists. Tacit knowledge is the knowledge contained in people"s heads. The challenge inherent in tacit knowledge is figuring out how to recognize, generate, share, and manage knowledge that resides in people"s heads. Shadowing: less experienced staff observe more experienced staff to learn how their more experienced counterparts approach their work. (more passive) Joint problem solving: the expert and novice work hand in hand on a task.
