A seemingly small question, but if you imagine yourself experiencing conflict with yourself, or with others, the question and your answer is really quite important. Partly that is because it is harder to do when we are experiencing conflict. Think of a conflict that you have been involved in. Anything will do for the moment, and try to recall the details. Conflict tends to promote our more primitive responses, paradoxically at the moment when complex thinking is needed the most. We feel rushed to respond either by fighting or fleeing the scene. The ability to critically self reflect is the foundation of personal, organizational and system change. And it takes a complexity lens to understand conflict as a whole.
