Document Summary

Two weeks ago, we began to explore our different perspectives on conflict. We learned that our behaviour, feelings and perceptions towards conflict are shaped by a number of different factors such as cultural norms and previous experiences. By now, you should be getting the idea that conflict, in and of itself, is not a bad thing. Rather, how we handle it would seem to be the key factor in determining whether conflict is going to be destructive or constructive. Over the next two sessions, we will be focusing on conflict engagement and intervention. Readings across the two sessions are intended to introduce you to the most common concepts and processes in the field while at the same time, challenging you to critique the underlying assumptions about them. Bernard mayer would refer to this as engaging and intervening in conflict. This may depend on the social context in which the conflict occurs or the cultural norms present.
