Drive research & be a product of research process. Gerontological theories= grounded in foundational perspectives schools of thought. Help with the foundation of research questions. Research questions inform understandings & interpretations of research findings about aging phenomena. Ultimate goal= produce knowledge that explains aging phenomena & social processes of aging. Asserts that individuals undergo process of socialization through which they learn about established norms. These norms set parameters for what is socially acceptable & what is not. Considers the world as normative & static. Acknowledges human agency & individuals" participation in negotiation, construction & interpretation of social world. Social world= fluid: multiple realities rather than one truth, allows for differences in interpretation. See world as dynamic & divide society in relation to systems of power & authority. Address power imbalances that exist in society.
