Older adults in western countries usually have low social status. Modernization theory: as societies become more modern & industrialized, the status of older people declines, devaluing cultural knowledge/ wisdom of older people= loss of power & social status. Aging = universal process but how a person ages varies across culture, geographies, & historical periods. Culture= symbolic order & set of shared meaning to social life. Includes values, beliefs, norms, customs, & knowledge: represented in language, art, tech, mass media, music, literature, games . Compare & contrast & family responsibilities between generations. Older adult population reflects rest of society in canada: many different cultures & languages. Minority groups (subcultures) are at risk of facing discrimination.
