Document Summary
Field of demography investigates size, structure , & distribution of populations: number of people that fall into specific age categories. Assess how & why populations change: fertility, mortality, migration patterns. Beginning in late 1800s, high fertility & morality rates changed to low fertility & mortality. Demographic transition saw life experiences increase, populations grow, & immigration develop. Typical shift takes place over number of years (around 100) but in less developed countries, it"s occurring faster bc of worldwide distribution of food, medicine, & tech. 4 phases of demographic transition: population explosion, population implosion, population displosion, technoplosion. Advancements in health promotions & care--- contribute to shift from mortality. Baby boom generation has brought issue of living healthy and health promotion efforts aimed at postponing onset of chronic illness. Used to examine given population"s age structure/ composition. These ratios reveal changing demography in population: help assess types of dependency that might exist in society.
