June 6, 1944 - first troops start to land early on beaches. 130 000 troops total assault beaches, all groups overcome german defenses by night. Allied forces secure way for more men and tanks and supplies. Allies able to push farther inland after around 20 weeks. Allies landed 1. 3 million and lost 10% Nazis lost 500 000 men defending france. August 1944 - hitler orders all out counter-attack, destroys most of nazi army in france.
