HST 604 Lecture 4: HST604 Module 4
Document Summary
Hst604 module 4 - beyond europe: the globalization of the cold war. Confrontation in the middle east: iran and turkey. The soviets were interested in dardanelle straights, eastern mediterranean, persian gulf. The middle east was not only a gateway to asia, but it also offered vast reserves of petroleum a critical ingredient for economic prosperity. Moscow began an effective intimidation campaign against the iranian government in tehran, making several demands: autonomy for azerbaijan, concessions to oil reserves, and retention of soviet troops in the north. When the war concluded, it was clear that the soviets showed little interest in leaving. Thinking that his position in iran had been secured, stalin withdrew his troops. Almost immediately an american military mission arrived in the capital and an arms deal was made with. But he had his eyes set on other projects as well. Soviets wanted straits between the black sea and the mediterranean.
