Fashionable to flatten forehead with hard object during childhood. Ears and nasal pierced for feathers & plugs. Carved human masks, guaiza, worn for sign of rank. Agriculture: went up mounds to cultivate crops in permanent fields. Made it easier to weed and harvest crops, and more lengthy storage. Cassava was main root crop then sweet potato. Fruits, calabashes, cotton, & tobacco were grown around houses. Tainos caught fish in nets, poisoned & trapped them. Most elaborate ball courts were in puerto rico. Both men and women could be chiefs, with specially built houses, throne stools, transportation, and wear insignia for their rank.
