House (influenced by british suffragettes: picketers were arrested and jailed; some staged hunger strikes in duress, used street meetings, billboards, and compiled indexes on politicians to apply pressure. Alice paul: led a major hunger strike that saw her force-fed by security. Temperance activists campaigned for local & state laws prohibiting the manufacturing and sale of alcohol. Women"s christian temperance union (1874) and frances willard: women would sing and pray in saloons, lobby politicians, engage in petition drives targeting immigrants and workers. Drives drinking underground contributing to the rise of organized crime. Temperance activists support female suffrage as a way to pass prohibition laws. 18th amendment (1919): bans the manufacture and sale of alcohol.
