Hst 755 material cultures of north america. 1861 urban areas began to surface, manufacturing, bigger cities. 1900"s- too many railways, caused business of smaller companies go bankrupt. *1812-1861 (great advancement, transportation of goods and services became easier, tickets for trains lowered)* Personal houses: owner must make their own road in front of their house. People would pay fines if they did not want to do the labour. *roads were very primitive at this time, roads were impossible to travel in fall and winter* Corduroy roads were still used up until the 2nd world war. Macadamized roads still used to this day, quite commonly in southern ontario. Roads would be made up of layers of stones. The more the roads were used the more the road hardened, making it more efficient. Also cut costs and time for longer travel ventures. Water transportation: primary way people got from a to b. Canoes became the classic way of traveling in water.
