Product design: determining the form and function of the product. Building a business case -> market and competitor analysis; determine what customers want. Development -> translate the (cid:498)voice of the customer(cid:499) into physical product specifications. Testing and validations -> perform external testing, finalize the product, buy machines, etc. Competition: reverse engineering: dismantling and inspecting a competitor"s product to discover what it is composed of and how the components work, searching for own-product improvements. Research and design (r&d): organized efforts that are directed toward increasing scientific knowledge and product or process innovation. Life cycle: incubation, growth, maturity, saturation, decline. Standardization: extent to which there is absence of variety in a part or product. Economies of scale reduce costs in production and purchasing. Reduced training costs and time: disadvantages. The product is composed of a number of modules or components instead of a collection of individual parts. May need to scrap entire module if faulty.
