Goal setting can make a big difference in how well management does in pointing people in the right directions and inspiring them to work hard. Set specific goals (clear picture in your mind as to what you want to achieve) Make sure goals are measurable (quantify them) Ensure goals are attainable (accomplishment is within reach) Goals must be realistic (within a practical range of achievement. Plan statement of action steps to be taken in order to accomplish the objectives. Planning process of setting objectives and determining how to best accomplish them. The roles of planning and controlling in the management process. Improves focus, flexibility, action orientation, coordination & control, time management. Short-range plans = 1 year or less. Higher management levels focus on longer time horizons.
