Document Summary

The geography of the homeless in the city. Most are single adult males between the ages of 25-55. In the last 5-10 years we have seen an increase in other groups of people such as youth, aboriginal people, women & children. Homelessness is expensive: not only a problem for homeless people, but canadian economy. Prepared in 2011 by the wellesley institute a research center in the city of toronto: they focus on issues about social justice on the urban land (homelessness, housing, etc) Other reasons are they are overcrowded (put matts on the floor for sleeping, and can be stepped on) Violence is common in shelters because there are a lot of angry and upset people. Things are easily stolen in shelters: the shelter system in toronto is very complicated. Most shelters are gender divided only a few are for families. Therefore if you are a homeless family, you have to sleep outside to be together.
