Geography 106 Intensive Course QUIZ #2 Mental Maps, Place, Territory
Know what a composite elements map and a mental map are.
Mental Maps
- Mental maps: distorted, ego-centric images of place, mentally stored by individuals and drawn upon as
resources in interpreting, organizing and decision-making with respect to a person’s actions in an
environment
- Mental maps are what you use to remember the spatial arrangement of information you need to make
geographic decisions (routes, connecting routes, how you get to and from places, etc…)
Composite Elements Map
- Lynchs elements labelled on the composite mental map
- Composite maps: how many times of people repeat from a bunch of mental maps
It determines what should be improved in the area and what is strong already
Know what designative, prescriptive and appraisive images are.
Designative, Appraisive, Prescriptive Images
- Designative images/perception “it is like this”: refer t the manner in which spatial attributes such as
distance, direction, size, shape, and orientation are perceived by humans and then used in spatial
decision making, part of which may be the creation of a mental map
How perception distorts “objective” spatial geometry
- Appraisive images/perception “I like this”: refer to the value judgements people make about
environments, such as crime-ridden areas of the city (value judgement)
How perception labels space and location so that is becomes place
- Prescriptive images/perception “it should be like this”: refer to people’s preferences and judgements
about how things should be, such as when planning departments designate some areas as single family
detached housing and some areas for apartments, and labelling areas as “Weston” or “Hogg’s Hollow”
How perception would like space and place to be
Know how information surfaces and distance decay are related.
- Knowledge and familiarity decreases as distance
increases
Know why do we seek territorial boundaries?
- We Seek Territory:
- To secure basic sustenance
- For personal and tribal security of
- For socialization
- To satisfy the need for identity

Know what territoriality does for groups?
- Definition: the continuous or discontinuous space used by an individual or group for interactions that
contribute to satisfying the need for sustenance, security, socialization and identity and is strongly related
to sense of place
Know Lynch’s elements.
- Paths Lines of Movement e.g. sidewalks, highways, railways, creeks, streets
- Edges Lines as Barriers to Movement e.g. waterfront, railways, Donvalley, streets, highways
- Nodes Point Features that can be Entered and Form Foci Crossways, Dundas Square, Eatons, Union
- Landmarks Point Features Usually not Entered but Highly Visible (Prominent) CN Tower, Big Ben
Know how spatial changes with various socio-demographic variables.
Know how cognitive spatial relationships change with age.
- Infants have to learn that when something
disappears, it’s actually somewhere else,
everything is in relation to them
- As you get older, the way of learning and
recognizing the location of things is less ego-
centric
