Document Summary
Formalism, realism and classic hollywood the style of film of film history. Realism and formalism: film critics identify three main and broad categories of film styles: realism, formalism, and the classical hollywood. In this sense, hollywood stays away from formalism and realism in their purer forms, and can be seen as a fusion of the two. Formalism: formalism is a style of film that highlights the form, over the content. Examples: filmmakers from the hollywood renaissance are never that radical. Working in hollywood, they still preserve the illusion of a real story world, and create continuous and absorbing narratives. Nonetheless, in the 70s woody allen experimented with film structure and cinematography, as did francis ford coppola, stanley kubrick, martin scorsese, and terrence malick. All of these filmmakers made complex and original films, which were popular blockbusters at the time. In the european art film traditions, and national cinemas, there was a lot more room for experimenting.
