Document Summary
Mrs. danvers is more emotional in the novel when referring to rebecca she often cries. Plays a more maternal role in the novel. in the film she is cold and is obviously fond of rebecca, however the main emotion her character portrays is coldness towards the new mrs. de winter. In the novel, frank crawley and the new mrs. de winter have a more established relationship. She often confides in him and comes to him for a comforting shoulder to lean on. This shows her as not emotionally isolated as she is in the film. Perhaps the friendship was not established in the film to emphasize the relationship between mr. and mrs. de winter. Maxim never considers suicide in the novel. perhaps in the film it is established as so to show that maxim is unhappy and haunted by his past. It is not certain whether mrs. danvers set the fire or not.
