Large vessels enter base of skull & vessels join to form arterial circle. From brain into large venous sinuses in dura. Central nervous system consists of: brain & spinal cord: surrounded by several membranes called meninges. Pia (thin inner membrane & adheres to brain & spinal cord), & Arachnoid (middle membrane between dura & pia) Subarachnoid space: space btw the arachnoid & pia. Cns: composed of nerve tissue neurons & supporting cells neuroglia: neurotransmitters, chemicals that assist transmission of nerve impulses. Development of nervous system: neural plate (develops into) neural tube. Vertebral bodies: mesoderm (surrounding neural tube) forms. Surrounding structures: forebrain forms cerebral hemisphere & diencephalon (posterior forebrain, midbrain & hindbrain form remainder of adult brain. Voluntary motor activity: controlled by nerve impulses from motor neurons of the cerebral cortex (cortical neurons, muscle tone = passive partial contraction of the muscle, caused by: reflex arcs (ex: posture, controlled by 2 separate motor systems.
