1/10 children under 1 year old died, more than 1/10 in the second year of life. Parents expected children to die: don"t get too attached, but also treat them as precious; two different approaches. Grammar schools and ragged school: mandatory schooling introduces in 1850s. 19th century child labour: coal miner, servant, prostitute, rat catcher, bird scarer, strawberry girl, factory worker. Children"s literature: started when publishers realized children were profitable, taught moral, life lessons. An ancient literary form that tells a fictional story which conveys a moral lesson. Aesop (620-564 bce); fabulist credited with creating various stories characterized by anthropomorphized nonhuman animals, riddles, and moral insight. Anthropomorphism: the attribution of human characteristics to animals primarily (but also plants, gods, spirits, and inanimate things) Poverty and oppression reduces the length of one"s childhood.
