Expectation: defamiliarize fairy tales approach them as if they"re alien allows for critical and historical analysis. Fairy tales come from a world completely unlike ours keep in mind how strange these tales are and what these tales meant to the people who told them. Folk tale: oral tales, continual preserved and circulated through speech: participatory because the audience participates in the story, face to face, responsive to the specific needs/desires of that group/audience, anonymous, no single identifiable author. Fairy tale: printed, circulated on paper, consumed individually and privately: usually the product of the folk tale that enters into a print culture, fixed and unchanging, single author. Something that"s happened can"t happen again in the same way. Uniqueness and individualism: pre-modern cyclical. Birth youth maturity age death. In puss in boots and jack and the beanstalk, the stories begin by describing how the characters are starving/about to die.
