What qualifies a story as a fairy tale is the element of magic/supernatural happenings. These things are never questioned in the story - they are just accepted as part of the world. Oldest type of story in the western world. Four types of stories we talk about which are all a type of folklore: Myth - tends to be about god(s)/origin stories. Legend - focus on human beings with extraordinary traits (eg. hercules) Fable - about animals or other creatures, short, moral lesson (eg. tortoise and the hare) Fairy tale - about people, have magic or supernatural in them. Called folktales because they emerged and belonged to the common people. Fairy tales were not originally intended for children.
