Exam: 10 t/f, 10 mlc, sas, 1 of 3 las. Deviance: sociological concept, theory for understanding how people get labelled. Deviance: differing from accepted standards of a society. Normal distribution = bell curve = not natural, is socially produced. What is deviant always changes because norms change. Norms define deviance, labelling it also defines what is normal. Breastfeeding shows shift between what"s normal and what"s not. Pre 50s, it was fine, then 50s on, formula became trendy, then lately, breastfeeding is back. Homonormativity: if queer, do normalcy to access certain privileges, e. g. two gay men getting married = tax benefits. E. g. gender conformity, race, class, all affect ability to mimic normalcy. Queer dsm, but still there"s a gender dysphoria diagnosis. Deviancy and criminality - some deviancy not criminal, etc. Sex work won"t be fully not deviant until it"s decriminalized. Norms change according to geography, culture, history. Normalcy isn"t naturally the norm - we create the normative order.
