Phillipe pinel (1745 - 1826) - french alienists (i. e. early psychiatrists) During pinel"s time, if your behaviour bothered society you were sent to institutions and chained - there was no treatment of the illness . Pinel changed this and thought of cure/rehabilitation. Moral theory - get them in a routine to become more socially acceptable and be able to leave the asylum. Believed there was something wrong in the brain casing madness. Re-popularised hysteria but caused by malfunctioning of the brain.
