Discipline and punish michel foucault: prisoners did not know when they were being watched. Inmates could be placed in sells and monitored by one person who oversees everyone. Idea that prisoners represented a chance to reform them: prison is an opportunity to work on your weaknesses, keeping people isolated and quiet at all times. Auburn model: eating together and working together with inmates during some parts of the day, some parts of the day kept in quiet isolation. Wwii: more focus on throughcare, more job skills gained means more job opportunities, focus on training prisoners with skills.
