Phone surveys, we aren"t always truthful so approach these surveys with caution. Can be biased, unreliable: uniform crime report survey. Reported to the police: victimization survey. What can they tell us: general picture of crime rates and trends, locations, characteristics of offenders and victims, cost, cjs responses, perceptions (trying to influence the way we think about crime) Incarceration rates (most measureable as people can be easily counted) What can"t they tell us: crime committing, root cause (poverty= had to steal because of unemployment, complexities (so many issues occurring, cannot fit into a number, circumstances and contexts.
