Culture: a basic set of values (two contexts in which culture can take place) Close connections are made between people over long periods of time. A situation where you just know what to do. What is a word: a special kind of sign or symbol, made up of two parts: signifier and signified. Signifier the letters on the page that make up the word (ex// smile) Signified what those letter represent to the person reading them (ex// ) Letters on the page v. s. what they symbolize. Words come in 2 means: (how words fit into certain cultural categories) To be denotative in the goal for engineers. This is the idea od the word. The feeling & context that the word provides. Ex// lion = fierce, strong, brae, angry, hairy, etc.
