CMN 414 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Emoticon, Jargon, Proxemics
Document Summary
Chapter 6 - verbal and nonverbal communications in groups. Verbal communication: the way in which words in a language are used to generate meaning. Face-to-face, over the phone, through electronic mail, etc. Without language, you cannot have a group discussion, read a report, or effectively interact. Nonverbal communication: the use of message components other than words to generate meaning. Without a nonverbal component, it is difficult to interpret the meaning of spoken language. Tone of voice, eye contact, and physical proximity can reveal just as much as their actual spoken words do. Verbal messages express the literal content of the message and nonverbal expresses the emotional meaning. Refers to the behavioural elements of messages other than spoken words. Appearance, posture, and facial expressions send messages. Nonverbal behaviour accounts for 60-70% of meaning. High-context culture: a cultural perspective in which gestures, silence, facial expressions, and the relationship among communicators are more reliable indicators of meaning.
