CMN 414 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Virtual Team, Glass Ceiling, Situational Leadership Theory
Document Summary
Leadership- the ability to make strategic decisions and use communication effectively to mobilize group members toward achieving a common goal. Motivating, supporting and focusing the attitudes and behaviours of group members. Successful leaders effectively manage dialectic tensions such as: individual goals vs. group goals, conflict vs. cohesion, structure vs. spontaneity. Leadership and the term (cid:498)leader(cid:499) are not the same thing: leader is a title given to a person, leadership can refer to any member who is instrumental in mobilizing members to achieve. Management and leadership are also very different: managers are concerned with getting an assigned job done whereas leaders focus on the the group"s goal group"s ultimate direction and goal. Leaders are often the main reason why people quit their jobs. Critical leadership skills: self-awareness, self-discipline, patience, clear thinking, relationship building, excellent communication skills, and decisiveness. Effective leaders set aside their egos and bring out the leadership in others.
