Document Summary
Disease is often categorized by symptoms- diarrhea, bloody diarrhea. Colitis- w/ inflammation of large intestine the digestive system. Secretory diarrhea- rice water diarrhea (>1l/hour: profuse diarrhea with loss of electrolytes from the small intestine, non-inflammatory disease, no fever, toxin-mediated disease. The massive fluid loss can lead quickly to electrolyte imbalances that can themselves be fatal. Once you lose 10% of body weight by diarrhea it can be fatal. Inhabit brackish water and associate primarily with copepods and other small crustaceans it is a marine bacterium, and is associated with biofilms spread through feces or contaminated water entry. Vibrio cholerae has a relatively high infectious dose- 106-1011 cfu. Diseases/treatments that reduce stomach acid can increase susceptibility. Bacteria ultimately arrive in the small intestine and colonize the surface spread/multiplication. Bacteria attracted to epithelium, penetrate the mucus layer and bind enterocytes. Toxin coregulated pilus binds to receptors on small intestine. Bacterium replicates in the duodenum where there are few competitors.
