BLG 600 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Loose Connective Tissue, Muscle Fascicle, Skeletal Muscle
Document Summary
Responsible for body movement such as locomotion, facial expressions, posture and respiratory movements. Responsible for propelling urine, mixing foods in digestive tract, dilating/constricting pupils and regulating blood flow. Responsible for movement of blood in heart. Contractility: ability of muscle to shorten with force. Excitability: capacity of muscle to respond to stimulus from nerves. Extensibility: muscle can be stretched to its normal resting length beyond to a limited degree. Elasticity: ability of muscle to recoil t original rating length after stretched. Skeletal muscle is composed of muscle cells (fibers), connective tissue, blood vessels and nerves. Fibers have smaller diameter is small muscles and larger diameter in large muscles (1 mm - Striated appearance of skeletal muscle is due to high and dark banding. A muscle group is comprised of many muscle fibers that consist of many layers. Epimysium: connective tissue that consists of many fascicles and surrounds a whole muscle.
