BLG 143 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Cell Adhesion, Lipid Bilayer, Intermediate Filament
Document Summary
Plasma membrane made of phospholipid bilayer w/ interspersed proteins. The phospholipids and proteins have carbohydrates attached, which form glycolipids and glycoproteins. Some proteins are attached to cytoskeleton within cell and/or to materials outside of the cell. >composed of fiber composite: a cross linked network of long filaments surrounded by ground substance. Animals secrete an extracellular matrix: consists of ground substance formed by gelatinous polysaccharide and network of protein fibers instead of polysaccharide filaments. >more elastic than cellulose, forms a flexible extracellular layer. Communication even occurs in between unicellular organisms, for ex. by forming biofilms of cells. Tissues: groups of cells that perform similar function. Structures that hold cells together vary among multicellular organisms. 3 of them: tight junctions, desmosomes, selective adhesion, tight junctions. Membrane proteins in the plasma membrane of adjacent animal cells. Watertight seal is created by proteins lining up and binding to each other, stitching the 2 cells together.
