Document Summary

Chapter 2: water and carbon: the chemical basis of life. 2. 1 atoms, ions, and molecules: the building blocks of chemical evolution. Hydrogen, carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen make up 96 percent of all matter found in organisms. Electrons orbit an atomic nucleus made up of larger particles called protons and neutrons. Protons are positively charged, electrons are negatively charged and neutrons are electrically neutral. Each element contains a characteristic number of protons called its atomic number. The sum of protons and neutrons in an atom is called its mass number. The number of protons in an element does not vary, if it does then the element becomes transformed into another. Forms of an element with different numbers of neutrons are called isotopes. The masses of protons and neutrons are virtually identical and are rounded to one baton. The mass of an electron is so small that it is omitted.
