Functional classification of joints: based on the amount of movement by the joint: synarthroses (movable joints, amphiarthroses (slightly moveable, diarthroses (freely moveable) Structural classification of joints: material binding the bone together and whether or not the joint cavity is present: fibrous joint (immovable, cartilaginous joint (rigid and slightly movable, synovial joint (freely movable) Synovial joints: bones are separated by joint cavities include all the limbs joints; most joints of the body. General structure: articular cartilage hyaline cartilage covers the opposing bone surface, joint (synovial) cavity space that contains synovial fluid, articular capsule , synovial fluid, reinforcing ligaments, nerves and blood vessels. Movements of synovial joints: gliding, angular movements, flexion, extension, hypertension, abduction, adduction, circumduction, rotation, medial or lateral rotation.
