Document Summary

Anabolism reactions that build larger molecules from smaller ones. Concepts: glucose is broken down, e- get transferred from glucose to oxygen, atp is generated. Pathways: oxidize organic fuels produced by plants, yielf atp. Without o2 (anaerobic: cellular respiration (above) Gi tract lumen digests it to absorbable forms. Transport via blood from gi tract to tissue cells. Oxidative breakdown of stage 2 products (in mitochondria) Co2 is liberated, h atoms are delivered to molecular o2 (forming h2o) Some energy released is used to form atp. Oxidation gain of o2 or the loss of h+, lose energy. Reduction gain of h+ or the loss of o2, gain energy. As food fuels are oxidized, their energy is transferred. Dehydrogenases catalyze redox reactions where h+ ions are removed. Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (nad+) based on niacin. Flavin adenine dinucleotide (fad) based on riboflavin. High energy phosphate is transferred directly from phosphorylate dsubstrates.
