BCH 261-061 Biochemistry - January 17th, 2018
○ Quizzes/assignments will be done primarily through Mastering Chemistry so if
you haven’t already registered, registering should be your first priority.
Lab (35%)
● Reports and assignments are 70% ( 24.5 % of your total grade)
● Participation given by your TA is 10% (3.5% of your total grade)
● Presentation during the last weeks of the lab are worth 10% (3.5% of your total grade)
● Pre-lab quizzes are also worth 10% (3.5% of your total grade)
The Midterm date is tentatively set for March 7th 2018, any changes to the date will be
mentioned early in advance. All lecture quizzes are done on Mastering Chemistry.
Lecture format will be PowerPoint slides and will be available for download from the course
D2L site after each lecture(possibly subject to change)
Lab start dates
● Jan 15th (Section 1-6)
● Jan 22nd (Section 7-12)
You must pass both the lecture and lab components and you cannot miss more than 2 labs
How to prep for labs
● Purchase the lab manual from Sherwood Copy & Print at 165 Dalhousie St
● You must make a flow chart before every single lab or you will not be allowed into the
lab
● There will be a pre-lab quiz before every lab
● The schedule is available for viewing on D2L
Lecture
What is Biochemistry?
● Biochemistry is the study of the chemistry of living organisms
● Biological molecules that make up cells are made up of building blocks and complex
molecules
● The study of biomolecules
○ Structure and function
○ Interconversion
■ The process by which two things are each converted into the other, often
as the result of chemical or physical activity.
○ Energetics

BCH 261-061 Biochemistry - January 17th, 2018
■ The study of the energy changes involved in physical and chemical
reaction, changes, and systems of living organisms. e.g. The production of
energy, its storage, and its use
Section 1: pH and Water
● Non-covalent interactions
● Properties of H2O - polarity, hydrogen bonds, hydrophobic interactions etc.
What is Fentanyl?
● Fentanyl is an opioid similar to morphine but much more potent
● Opioids bind to
𝜇
-opioid receptors
○ Through hydrogen bonding directly to ASP147, Tyr32C, and water molecules
○ Other type of molecular interactions
● Why is it dangerous?
○ Fentanyl binds more tightly than morphine and more tightly than natural brain
hormones so even low doses can causes maximal binding
○ Fentanyl can control pain sensation, breathing and cardiac function
● Fentanyl and other opioids bind to the
𝜇
-opioid receptor by non-covalent interactions
● Fentanyl and other opioids bind to the
𝜇
-opioid receptor causes receptor activation
which activates the GTPase proteins that in turn leads to changes in neurons where the
end result is fatal.
Bond energies of non-covalent interactions
