Trying to understand vs. trying to control (the four approaches: tenacity, authority, fashion, inquiry *refer to last week"s notes) Peaceful ideologies- closest to truth than other ideologies innocent, condition, useful & often true. What makes them harmless, is that they have been tested (we don"t look into them) Questionable, cliched, automated, often false (ordinary assumptions) Ex. (tenacity) i don"t care what anybody says (you against the world), sucks to be you , (authority)father/mother know best, statistics show (spurious correlation), god is a male, (fashion) everybody"s doing it , Deadly ideologies they are, assuming free trade workers get better pay. Misak"s article: pragmatism on solidarity, bullshit and other forms of truth . A true belief is such that the logical consequence would fit harmoniously with our otherwise rounded knowledge, were we to pursue our investigations as far as they could fruitfully go . Grounded knowledge is inadequate, but there"s something much more complex that we have not considered.
