The context for the american sociology in the 1950s is the cold war. American society imagined as a stable, consensual society. America seemed to offer democratic, capitalist alternative to totalitarianism. Employing survey research and mathematical models to link peoples attitudes to social positions. Structural functionalism became dominant, analyzing society as a complex, abstract and uni ed system. Inspired by the chicago school, symbolic interactionalism examined the concrete, everyday life of society and social interactions that take place within it.
