Researcher develops close relationships with the participants. Theory and concepts develop outside of the research as apposed to developing within by testing knowledge. Look to engage in natural environment with the participants instead o an artificial one like in a laboratory. The importance of empathy is very constant throughout this understanding. Helps us understand why someone"s behaviour which might seem abnormal might make it seem normal. The goal is to show how things and patterns develop over time. Must spend a lot of time in the field as researchers to fully understand. Theory isn"t involved until after we collect our data.
