The most direct way of studying ritual is by attending it -ronald grimes, the craft of ritual. Lawsuit demands us remove in god we trust" from money . When writing ritual assignment, i must justify why my choice is a ritual. The ritual must not be purely instrumental, it must mean something as well, must involve performance (roles, costumes, performances can vary, etc. ) , must be built within the norms of a society, must be communicated within the norms of the society, repeated , etc. Easier to act oneself into a new way of thinking than think oneself into a new way of acting (barry stevenson, 95) Ritual that transforms participants physically = circumcision/tattooing. Puberty rites (boy to man, girl to woman) Magic- goal of magic (according to stevenson) is to transform the world (negative connotation associated with magic; the idea that we can change the world through thought is represents a basic misunderstanding of how the world works)
