Begins receiving revelations from god (allah) through the angel. In 613 begins to preach on the basis of the revelations he has received; meets much resistance. In 619, both his wife and his uncle two key supporters die. Later (619-621, depending upon the source) muhammad has an experience of ascending to heaven where he meets prophets and god. This journey to yathrib (medina)known as the hijrah. For muslims, religious time is dated in relation to the hijrah.
