Week 2: situating the scholarship of teaching and learning. Class notes: contamination, seeing effect shows there"s probably an even bigger effect size without contamination, leads to smaller effect size, so typically not a huge concern, happens if students see or use the teaching style their friends receive. If there is significant difference even with possibility of leakage, the new method is probably effective: ethics around implementing innovative teaching styles, since not all get access to same thing. Exam review notes: lab studies the gold standard for inferring causation due to being able to control for variables (true experimental method, less generalization to real classrooms with duration/external factors (external validity) Instructor ratings tend to go really down with new methods i. e. active learning.
