Document Summary
Week twelve lateralization, language & emotion, & psychiatric. Evolutionary perspective for lateralization & language: emotion. Lateralization refers to certain neural functions & cognitive processes that tend to be more dominant in one hemisphere over the other. For many functions, there are no substantial differences between hemispheres. Key concept: lateralization of function is statistical rather than absolute. It is the relative difference between the two hemispheres. The processes that display consistent lateralization include: Broad categories are not lateralized even though individual tasks may be. It is more useful to consider lateralization of cognitive processes as individual components of cognitive elements. : spatial task: left hemisphere is better at judging above or below, right is better at determining how close two things are to each other. In general, anatomical differences are difficult to determine because of individual differences, no clear cortical boundaries, & failure of definitional consensus.
