PSYC 271 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Brain Tumor, Brain Ischemia, Motor Neuron
Document Summary
Week four brain damage & neuroplasticity: causes of brain damage, neurological disease, brain mechanisms of dealing with cns damage, neuroplasticity. A lot can be learned about normal functioning from examining deficits after brain damage. Much of our early understanding of brain function comes from case studies of individuals that experienced brain damage: ex. H. m. had invasive surgery when his bilateral lobes were removed. Most of his hippocampus was removed & he lost memory capabilities. This contributed to understanding how the hippocampus works & how it is involved with memories. A tumour (neoplasm) is group of cells growing independently of the rest of the body. Meningiomas: tumours that grow between the meninges, the three membranes that cover the central nervous system: these are all encapsulated, not infiltrating. Two types: encapsulating within an outer layer, own membrane. Push the surrounding brain tissue out of the way. Infiltrating spread throughout healthy tissue, destroying it.
