Document Summary
We need to observe behaviour, either by looking inside the environment or by looking for consequences. Conception takes place when a single sperm from a male fuses with an ovum from a female, marking the beginning of the first stage of development. Germinal period: the first two weeks after the sperm and egg unite: lasts around 8-10 days after conception. Gamete: a mature male or female cell used for reproduction: example: sperm and ova. Haploid: having one set of chromosomes instead of the usual complement of two: this means that each contains only half of the genetic complement required for life. Zygote: a single new cell formed at conception. Diploid: a cell containing both sets of chromosomes: after the zygote has received half a genome from each gamete, it now has a full genetic load. During the germinal period, the zygotic cell divides multiple times, creating numerous identical copies that hold together in a spherical shape.
