Gender refers to the psychological experience of femaleness or maleness. A person"s subjective sense of the sex to which they belong. An intrinsic part of each person"s sense of self. Awareness of their own individual nature, characteristics and existence. Begins to form at 17-18 months of age. Starting at 24-36 months, most children show fairly consistent awareness of their own gender. Cisgender individuals: alignment between biological sex and gender identity. Trans individuals: identify as a gender other than the one assigned at birth (usually based on genital anatomy or one level of their biological sex) Schema: organized clusters of memories that make up one"s knowledge about events, objects and ideas. Summarizes interpretations of all the info that they have acquired about gender. Example; girls like to play with dolls. Explains how but not why gender identity develops. Beliefs about how men and women should behave (activities, jobs, clothing, etc. )
