Common sense understanding of what it means. People are accurate in judging a stranger"s intelligence (as measured by formal intelligence tests) after very brief exposure. Practical intelligence (robert j. sternberg) street smarts : overcome obstacles, solve problems, make decisions via reality-based (rational) considerations, generally the ability to come up with efficient solutions to the problems of everyday life. Originally computed by comparing a child"s score against the scores of other children from a similar population but of different ages. Example: a 10 year-old child with a mental age of 7. Although the label of iq is still used today, it technically no longer exists. Makes sense for children but not adults. Adults" mental development does not change year by year like children. Use the deviation iq still called iq today. The normal distribution of scores for a standardized intelligence test.
